Cambodia Alerts UN Over Rising Border Tensions and Accuses Thailand of Violating Sovereignty

Phnom Penh, August 13, 2025 — On August 12, 2025, Cambodia escalated its diplomatic efforts, warning the international community of the worsening situation along its border with Thailand. In a powerful statement, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Prak Sokhonn briefed the United Nations on the fragile ceasefire and the ongoing provocations by Thai armed forces.

In urgent letters to the UN Secretary-General and Security Council President, Cambodia detailed repeated violations of its sovereignty by Thai troops. Despite the ceasefire agreement signed on July 28, 2025, Cambodian officials reported that Thai military units had crossed the border multiple times—illegally laying barbed wire, demolishing homes, and deploying heavy machinery in areas of Preah Vihear Province. These aggressive actions directly breach international treaties, bilateral agreements, and the commitments underpinning the fragile truce.

The Deputy Prime Minister pointed to a recent statement by Thailand’s 2nd Army Commander, who publicly vowed to reclaim Ta Krabey Temple and close Tamone Thom Temple—moves considered provocative and destabilizing. These activities occur within Cambodian territory, as established by historic treaties and maps ratified by the International Court of Justice, reaffirming Cambodia’s sovereignty.

Cambodia’s government demanded the immediate withdrawal of Thai forces, calling for adherence to existing agreements and respect for international law. They also lodged an official protest with Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, condemning ongoing military incursions and illegal activities. Cambodia emphasized that these violations undermine regional peace and threaten stability.

Rejection of Thai allegations was also prominent. Cambodia clarified that its statements were based on verified facts of ongoing Thai military operations, and called for both nations to refrain from provocative actions or false claims that could escalate tensions.

Throughout this critical period, Cambodia reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful resolution, urging the international community to support efforts for stability. Cambodia remains resolute, emphasizing diplomacy, legal adherence, and the importance of respecting borders—principles vital for regional peace and security.
